Steve Zieser, illustrator…

I’ve known Steve Zieser for almost 10 years. We first met at a local gaming day that he was coordinating. Our taste in games was similar so we hit it off pretty well. But what I did not know at the time was that he was also an artist and illustrator. An artist whose style I really admire. So it was natural for me to ask him if he would design a camera logo for me. (There it is in the upper left banner.)

I had seen some of Steve’s work off and on over the years, but it wasn’t until he invited me to play in a Labyrinth Lords game that I really saw the extent of his images. He did the cover and interior artwork for the book which add an old school RPG feel to the game. Which makes sense since it is an old school RPG rule book.

I didn’t know exactly what I wanted when I approached Steve to create a design. I sent him a few links of cameras and explained what I was looking for in terms of size and use. And he sent back some draft images.  The images I received completely blew me away. This goes to show you that trusting the artist pays off.

Steve’s black and white images draw me in easily, but then I like contrasty images so that makes sense. His color images have a muted color palette that reminds me of covers from 50’s and 60’s science fiction novels. Classic and cool.

You can check out Steve’s work in a few places. The first is his blog here where he posts images and talks about the process of drawing. You can also purchase some of his works from this site.
