Quiet contemplation…

It is that time of year when people reflect back on what happened over the last 12 months and think about what they want to accomplish over the upcoming 12 months. I’m sure I will do that as well in regards to the goals I set myself for 2013, but not today.

This is something that we should do more than once  a year. Not coming up with goals per se, but taking a few moments to just take a look back at where you have been and where you are going. It is cliche to say “To know where you are going you need to know where you have been.” But there is a grain of truth in buried in there. I would change it to something more like “To understand yourself you need to understand the events that shaped you, and you can then better control the events before you.” And the way to gain that self-awareness is to spend some time reflecting on your past, and your future.

  • What brought you to where you are today?
  • What did you learn from them?
  • Where do you want to go tomorrow?
  • How will you get there?
  • What is important to you?

Spend more time than just a few minutes at year end thinking about your goals. Use your past to create your future.
